Hailing from the Hinterlands, Jens Steckenpferd brings homegrown knowledge of farming from growing up in his parents’ agricultural business plus his own apprenticeship adventures in New Zealand to every vintage of Weinhaus Werther-Windisch. Jens took over the family farming business and transformed it into an independent winery with organic certification since 2020.
Special care and attention are given to the soil which is enriched with the parts of the grape typically discarded after fermentation, while native flowers are set up to flourish in the crop beds. The nurtured ecosystem returns high-quality grapes which enable Jens to use low intervention methods in his winemaking practices. The Rheinhessen is among Queen Riesling’s favorite lands, and Weinhaus Werther-Windisch is one our favorite expressions of her majesty. Jens also makes a delightful Sekt, perfect for any moments of celebration, relaxation, or occasion with oysters.
Tupetz Connection: Lisa and Jens met at Geisenheim University while both were studying viticulture and enology. Fond memories of tasting each others’ first vintages and giving feedback on blends bolster not only the friendship but Lisa’s conviction in the quality and character of Jens’ wines.
